Christopher Pouler, Artist. Lakeville, CT
I work in oil paints, pencil, oil pastels and mixed media in addition to producing three dimensional multi-media pieces. These works explore the human condition and how we each strive to find meaning and acceptance of the joys, struggles and suffering that we and others encounter in this increasingly complex and divisive world.
For the past 10 years I have been addressing the topic of the refugee crisis caused by war, striving to bring a human face to the issue. I’ve currently made over 160 portraits of refugees and recorded information and stories about many of them. My installations include multi-media pieces and opportunities for visitors to get involved in helping refugees. I am also illustrating a children’s book titled A Place in the World published by The Creative Company, due out in 2025. It follows a boy and his mother from a war-torn city to a refugee camp and finally finding a safe place.
Description of Artwork: This is a series of photos from an installation I did at Berkshire School in 2021 that addressed the migrant and refugee crisis world wide and in the US. It went on to be shown at Salisbury School. Both schools worked the installation into their curriculum and I did short lectures at each school about my process and motivation.
