Time Wounds All Heels

Laurie Fendrich, artist. Lichtfield County CT

After recentlly finishing this drawing, I looked at it and suddenly thought the two large white shapes seemed to be bumping against one another without communicating, and it struck me that it was a kind of abstract expression of our divided country.

My art builds on the visual ideas of such artists as Juan Gris, Lyubov Popova, Stuart Davis, and Charles Sheeler. I’m also inspired by Sienese painting and Ernie Bushmiller’s comic strip “Nancy,” which I loved as a child, My pictures derive their structures from synthetic cubism, and I see them as leaning toward the comic. I don't consider abstract art to be an ineffective way to change politics, but rather as one of the many ways people create unexpected beauty and help keep culture alive.
